Tavistock

Tavistock is one of the most delightful towns in the UK and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing; under Cornwall and Devon’s mining landscape.

There are various annual events in Tavistock, including The Goose Fair. In April/May every year there is the famous and exciting Tavistock Music & Arts Festival. There is an annual carnival and at Christmas the Dickensian Night is a step back in time to Christmases past. Sir Francis Drake was born in Tavistock and his life and achievements are highlighted in various ways throughout the town and in the local museum.

There are many varied and interesting activities in and around Tavistock. Some of the more unusual activities include visiting Countryman Cider a traditional cider maker located in 15th century stables in Milton Abbot. The Barn Climbing Centre offer climbing, bouldering, top roping and leadings. Letterboxing on Dartmoor involves walking across Dartmoor using clues and grid references in the hope of finding the hidden stamp and visitor’s book.

Tavistock Pannier Market

Nestled behind the Town Hall, and just off the busy high street, there is a shoppers’ paradise and one of the hidden gems of Tavistock.

In the centre of this beautiful pedestrianised area you will find the historic Pannier Market surrounded by some fantastic independent shops and cafes.

Inside the Market building itself you can discover a wide range of traders, artists and crafts people offering a personal service with quality goods at competitive prices.

Indoor Climbing

Right next door is The Barn Climbing Wall an indoor climbing centre. The Barn is a dedicated climbing venue, so if you are passionate about climbing or obsessed with bouldering then you will feel right at home. Housed in a massive barn, this uniquely crafted wall and free standing boulder provides a friendly and social place to train hard and meet other climbers

Buckland Abbey – Yelverton

Buckland Abbey ‘In the 13th century, Buckland Abbey was home to the Cistercian monks who built the Abbey and the incredible Great Barn and farmed the then vast estate. The Abbey, now a house with a combination of furnished rooms and interactive museum galleries, tells the story of how two seafaring adventurers ? Sir Richard Grenville and Sir Francis Drake ? changed the shape of the house and the fate of the country.’

Morwellham Quay

Morwellham Quay An award-winning World Heritage site, featuring historic port, copper mine , working Victorian farm, railway, heavy horses and museums of costume and mining. Just four miles west of Tavistock and bordering the beautiful River Tamar, amidst towering cliffs and gently rolling farmland, discover this  lost world with the help of our Living History team.
